One year ago today I experienced and filmed my first total solar #eclipse in Mexico.
Not sure when/where I'll get to see one again. It was so magical I feel compelled to try.
A little tempted to try for Iceland or Spain next year. Or maybe Gibraltar or North Africa in 2027. I've always wanted to see Morocco or Tunisia, so perhaps one of those would work out well.
And Japan in 2035 feels like a must-do. I have no excuse with 10yrs of time to prep and save for the experience.
Seeing notes in my stream about the #Eclipse one year ago today.
I'm of two minds about "life-changing events." I find that little day-to-day things can be life changing; a brief chat with someone can be a thing you obsess about for years. A random Tuesday observation can stick with you for a lifetime.
But in a more monumental way, going to Montreal, just a couple of hours away, for the Eclipse last year, and seeing it in a park with a few hundred ppl was truly a life-changing experience.
One year ago... #weather is what you get. Forecasted storms were late, cleared just enough just in time to see #SolarEclipse2024 totality in Mesquite TX. Since cumulus clouds grow with daytime solar heating, the partial eclipse leading up to totality apparently cooled the air enough to inhibit them. Not everyone was as lucky that day. Spring is unpredictable - actual cloud cover along the path of totality differed from average expectations. https://spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112237121736018901 #eclipse #astronomy #travel
Eclipse echoes: Study reveals surprising avian vocal patterns during solar eclipse

I also posted a similar quote online for the 2017 total solar eclipse, which I watched from Madras, Oregon. For viewing a total solar eclipse, it's a big deal to reach the path of totality. From that point, it's mostly up to the weather. But the eclipse will come to you once you're there. #astronomy #eclipse #travel
Marcia quoted me in her article, "I have arrived in the path of totality!" After the interview, we chatted about where we met before. I remembered her from 10 years earlier in 2014 at NASA's CRS-3 launch (SpaceX Falcon 9 & Cargo Dragon to ISS) where I had a "NASA Social" one-time social media pass and she was one of the pro media covering it. NASA TV showed us at adjacent seats asking questions in the post-launch news conference. https://spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112232761322006141 #astronomy #spacegeek #eclipse #travel
One year ago was the day before the April 8, 2024 Total #SolarEclipse2024. I got to Mesquite, Texas (eastern Dallas metro) around mid-day to try to arrive ahead of the crush of traffic as everyone came from everywhere to the path of totality. Even before I found a place to get lunch, I met a news crew preparing to cover the next day's festivities in downtown. I was interviewed by AP aerospace reporter Marcia Dunn. https://spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112231193378607141 #astronomy #spacegeek #eclipse #travel
A year ago tomorrow, a friend and I travelled to the Miramichi to capture the eclipse. This CF-101 Voodoo at the former CFB Chatham provided foreground interest for this composite image. #photography #composite #eclipse #solareclipse #sun #sky #jetfighter #voodoo #BlueSkyMonday #EastCoastKin

The Gargoyles' #Eclipse
Gargoyles on Notre Dame in Paris silhouette against a cloudy sky with a New #Moon partially eclipsing the Sun. Captured on March 29, 2025, during the first eclipse season, this event preceded a total #lunar eclipse and will be followed by another in September.

starting planning holiday in Spain for August 2026, possibly everywhere is booked up already, maybe should aim for August 2027...

this #map is very useful:

saw the one in 1999 in France, was mostly cloudy, remember it getting cold more than anything else
is it worth going the extra miles for 100% totality or is like 99.5% going to be almost as impressive?

A Double Sunrise from a Partial #Eclipse
The Sun appeared to rise twice in Quebec during a partial eclipse, with the #Moon obscuring parts of it. A video captures this rare event over the St. Lawrence River, showing 'double sunrise' and 'horns' as the eclipsed Sun emerges. The phenomenon lasted under two minutes.

Cloud Atlas
My best shot of Saturday's #eclipse. From here onwards the clouds rolled in even more and took away my view completely.
<sigh>
This was at 10:15am as the obscuration was beginning, so the moon is only a small curve on the right.

Parker: The Solar System from Near the Sun
NASA's Parker Solar Probe captured a time-lapse from inside #Mercury's orbit, showing coronal streamers, a Coronal Mass Ejection, and #planets like Mercury and #Venus. Between #Earth and #Mars, #Comet Tempel 1 appears. The video also shows high-energy solar particles. This data helps us understand space weather impacts on Earth.
