Give me a recommendation for a great Historical Fiction book.

Gregory Pittman

@matt
- Pillars of the Earth (skip the other four books in the series)
- A Gentleman in Moscow (!)
- Bernard Cornwell’s Arthur trilogy
- Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Chronicles series

@gdp I’ve read Pillars of the Earth. And all the others in the Series (many others by Follett too). I’ve also read Gentlemen in Moscow (enjoyed the series too) as well as the others by Towles.

I have never read Cornwell though. Where should I start?

@matt The Saxon Chronicles is the basis for the excellent The Last Kingdom series on Netflix. The Warlord Chronicles tell the story of Arthur but use real people. Oddly, Arthur is almost a minor character, which can be frustrating at times. The real main character is Derfel Cadarn, who was a real warrior in the 5th century.

@gdp Ohhh, The Saxon Tales is The Last Kingdom. Interesting. I enjoyed that show on Netflix, someone never realized it was him (I’m sure he’s credited in every single episode, I must be blind).

@matt The writing style in both Cornwell series is *very* similar. They read like the same story. And if you listen to the audiobooks, you would be forgiven for not being able to tell them apart.

@gdp I just hit the 50% point of Book 1 of The Saxon Chronicles. Loving it so far. 12.5 books to go.
