I am 70 pages into Gibson's "Neuromancer" and will probably stop there. I know it was seminal and revolutionary at the time, but I'm not enjoying it enough to finish.
I don't like any of the characters. I'm also realizing that in Sci-Fi, I dislike when the author throws too much in-world jargon around like I'm supposed to know it already. I used to think it was clever, but now find it annoying.
My nerd cred just lost another 10%, probably.
@jbaty I think I was pretty into the lingo back then anyways (apart from the Rastafarian), but I get what you mean. Clockwork Orange was quite a fight for the first few pages…
@mhd It almost ruined Stephenson's "The Diamond Age" for me.
@jbaty Same here. Only that I didn’t get up to 70 pages and gave up earlier.
@jbaty I recently read neuromancer for the first time (in the past couple of years) and wasn’t too impressed either. I will say that I also read his Jackpot Trilogy (recently adapted to television) and I really enjoyed the 2 books in that series.
If you haven’t read snow crash yet, it’s a good complement to neuromancer that is way more fun to read.
@n0madz I read Snow Crash so long ago that it would be like reading it for the first time, which I think I'll do!
@jbaty yeah I was in the same boat as you, it’d been forever since I read snow crash and I can say it pretty much withstood the test of time. I mean I can always use more Hiro Protagonist in my life but that’s true of any katana wielding, motorcycle riding, pizza delivery person.
@jbaty had the same experience as you. I ended up listening to the rest on audio book while DIYing the house, that made it better.
@jbaty Whatever you lose in nerd cred you recoup in geek cred for caring about the reader.
@jbaty If you’re looking for a good sci-fi, my favourite book of all time is Dan Simmonds' _Hyperion_ and its sequel.
I just read them again the other month for ... I've lost count ... the 10th time? I found it when I was 16.
@johnnydecimal Ugh, why can't I love the books everyone else loves? I tried and failed to get through Hyperion twice. It just didn't click. I think I'm the only one who doesn't love it.
@jbaty Oh! Oh that's so sad. Good job I found out now, just in time to scratch you off the Christmas card list. ;-)
@jbaty for someone who loves blogging and content mediums as much as you maybe the https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/series/TIF/the-illuminae-files/ ?
It is written through a series of journals, text messages, memos, computer logs, etc.
@soypunk Interesting, I'll check them out, thanks!
