There's a lot of slang on Weibo, and relying on Google Translate could literally get you the opposite meaning of what the poster is trying to say.

Reading is my way to Chinese fluency, for real. I read a bit of my graded reader and Weibo posts every day. My motivation to find out more goss about actors and Chinese dramas is a real motivator

I still cannot express how thrilled I am that I now recognise Chinese characters enough to read a graded reader to completion! Mind you I started 2024 completely illiterate in Chinese. (Only in reading, as I can understand a good chunk of Mandarin)

Anyone have any app or book recommendations for learning vocabulary for Japanese? I've started using HelloTalk recently and while I like it's chat feature, I really don't like how predatory it's pricing is for all of its other content. I could always use good-old digital (or physical) flashcards, but that doesn't provide varied contexts for words and requires a lot of setup. I also don't like Duolingo very much because, in my experience, it's very slow, has very strange sentence choices, and lacks proper grammar explanations for those sentences.

Ideally, I want a tool that:
- Features a lot of sentence variety
- Allows me to move at my own pace
- Focuses on natural/common sentence contexts
- Provides context/explanation for different grammar rules

Kanji are something I already have strategies for learning, so that's not a strong requirement, but would still be a nice bonus.

My use of "de" is kinda instinctive lol. I don't even know how I "know" lol. But this video is a good tutorial on how and when to use 的，得 or 地.

I finally made it to Level 8 of my French course with Duolingo! Finally...
This seemed to take forever.

Phew.

And now it all just gets tougher, oomph.

Lol reading this chapter from the graded reader from Mandarin Companion and have to chuckle to myself: This is peak Asian mum, for real.

Fyi the poor man is complaining about his mum's relentless matchmaking efforts.

I've been a little suspicious that almost everything I wrote in Chinese, ChatGPT said was .
However, today my faith was reaffirmed when ChatGPT corrected me when I wrote 我出家。

ChatGPT: "出家" usually means to become a monk or nun, which might not be the intended meaning.

Bwahaha. Would've made an interesting diary entry though.

But what's encouraging though is that I seemed to have internalised Chinese grammar ... mostly.

As a way to keep myself accountable and also learn Mandarin more effectively, I will be sharing how I'm trying to improve my Mandarin as a "heritage" speaker.

I want to get back to learning French, does anyone has recommendations for good language learning apps (beyond Duolingo) that actually work?

This is a very specific question, but here goes:

People that have experienced language attrition of their native language, how difficult was it to relearn your language? And do you have any tips on how to overcome mental blocks and other challenges with it?

If you are learning a new language in general, which techniques work best for you that I can try?

Currently I speak my native language very poorly (about A2 level), but English pretty much fluently. I'm taking lessons and I know native fluent speakers IRL, but it really is a struggle.
