Day 2 of our honeymoon pre-cruise tour of Beijing in 2008 started with us heading north to the Great Wall at Badaling. We climbed a section to the tower you see in the photo and we stopped several times because it was steep. At one point we were panting at one side, some young Chinese people were panting at the other, and some old Chinese bloke went walking up between us at a high pace. We caught eyes with the youngsters opposite us and all smiled and shook our heads.

A cloudless cool day. We're on a low section of the Great Wall of China looking at it rising in front of us, curving from bottom right into the left, then angling back to the right up onto the crest of a hill where it reaches a square tower before carrying on out of view. The wall is wide, perhaps up to three metres, and other than a few flat sections of paving stones is all stepped. People are walking up and down in streams either side with some gaps between and while there is lots of space there are still hundreds of people visible. The wall drops about four metres each side to dry, scrubby, hilly land.

Whenever I miss Beijing, I go through my archives and try to find a photo to edit. This photo has been with me for a bit over 4 years, but I never felt like I had gotten the edit right. I finally found one that works for me during one of my nostalgia searches.

I snapped this photo while scouting the Gubei Watertown for a photography workshop that I ran about a month before I moved away in 2020

Good morning... still one of my favorite shots of the Great Wall. My best friend and I would bike to this section of the wall on a regular basis. It became our 'Blue Remembered Hills' and we have often quoted the Housman poem to each other as we missed this life we had been blessed to live.

The Huanghuacheng section of the Great Wall goes up and down the valley into the distant hills. This image evokes a combination of thoughts for a few people in my life. My mum & my best friend. My mum would often talk about these hills she would see in Canberra near her home that had these ‘layers of color’. So, whenever I see ‘layers of hills/color’, I call it a ‘mum shot’. My best friend and I have quoted ‘Into my heart an air that kills’ by A. E. Housman to each other for over a decade. Usually when we missed those ‘blue remembered hills’ we’d bike to. As I edited this image, I sent him a screenshot and quoted the poem to him. “Into my heart an air that kills From yon far country blows: What are those blue remembered hills, What spires, what farms are those? That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain, The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.” ~ A. E. Housman

In 2018, I captured this photograph at the Juyong Pass, located just beyond Beijing. This is a restored section of the Great Wall. The steps going up the wall were taller than you would expect and the climb was difficult. On the way up, I heard panic attacks in at least three languages.
